Aidan O’Brien’s Scandinavia, the 2-1 favourite, held off the late charge of Rahiebb (14-1) by a neck to give Europe’s pre-eminent trainer his 16th Group One win of the season in the St Leger, the season’s final Classic.
Scandinavia had been joined at the head of the betting by his stable companion Lambourn, the Derby winner, earlier in the day but late money for Tom Marquand’s mount was rewarded as the jockey made maximum use of his mount’s proven stamina.
Lambourn cut out much of the running under Sean Levey but faded to finish only fourth after Marquand sent Scandinavia for home inside the final quarter mile. Stay True, a third O’Brien-trained runner in the seven-strong field, followed Rahiebb home in third.

Marquand was called up for the ride on Scandinavia after Ryan Moore, O’Brien’s stable No 1, was ruled out for the season with a leg injury last week, while Wayne Lordan, the trainer’s No 2, was absent because of a suspension.
“I rode him as a two-year-old at Newmarket and really liked him,” Marquand said. “It’s one of those, sometimes the stars align, I never thought I’d be winning a Leger on him but it’s nice riding those horses early on that you know are going to progress into staying types.
“It’s genuinely unbelievable, riding Group One winners is what we all want to do and riding Classic winners is even harder again.”
