British-Nigerian visual artist Yinka Shonibare – who put Nelson’s ship in a bottle in Trafalgar Square in 2010 – proves to be a wry, candid and deeply thoughtful chronicler of his own life. It is particularly affecting to hear how the impact of the spinal virus he contracted as a student in London shaped his outlook and creativity over the past 45 years. GV
