Trump rings in 2026 at Mar-a-Lago with $2.75m auction of Jesus painting

Donald Trump welcomed 2026 with a glitzy bash at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach where he auctioned off a freshly painted portrait of Jesus Christ for $2.75m and said his new year’s resolution was a wish for “peace on Earth”.

The portrait of Jesus had been painted onstage by artist Vanessa Horabuena who, the president said, was “one of the greatest artists anywhere in the world”.

“To me, she’s one of the greatest. In fact, she did something last night that was incredible. She can paint, slowly, a beautiful portrait for the White House, or she can paint the most incredible painting in literally 10 minutes,” he added on video of the event broadcast on conservative channel Newsmax.

Trump’s flow of superlatives continued as Horabuena tackled the large black canvas with a paintbrush as a band launched into a slow rendition of Hallelujah.

“Draw something really special. I don’t know what it is, but draw something really special,” he said, opening the bidding at $100,000. “I don’t know how you do that,” he said to the artist, explaining that half the auction proceeds would go to St Jude’s children’s hospital and half to the local sheriff’s department.

“These people are loaded with cash, just so you know,” he added.

The picture sold for $2.75m to a woman in a top hat. Revellers at the gala included former adviser Rudy Giuliani; the homeland security secretary, Kristi Noem; the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and his wife, Sara; the Emirati billionaire Hussain Sajwani; Brett Ratner, director of Amazon’s forthcoming Melania documentary; House Republican Tom Emmer; and Jeanine Pirro, attorney general for the District of Columbia.

Trump’s wish for “peace on Earth” came as reporters asked about a reported CIA-directed strike on a dock in Venezuela.

The Mar-a-Lago New Year’s Eve party – in previous years guests have included Martha Stewart, Serena Williams, Tiger Woods and Rod Stewart – is a Trump tradition dating back at least two decades. Tickets are $1,450.

The festivities followed a day of random topic bombing on social media, with the Trump calling Colorado’s Democrat governor, Jared Polis, a “scumbag” George Clooney “mediocre”, Democrats as a “bunch of cheaters and thieves”, and bigging up his administration’s tariff policies that he said had reaped “a World Record on investments”.

At least three of the 10 posts Trump fired off on Wednesday were related to the Minnesota governor, Tim Walz, and investigation of social services fraud.

Trump previewed what is likely to be a theme in the coming days. “Can you imagine they stole $18 billion,” Trump said. “That’s just what we’re learning about. That’s peanuts. And California is worse, Illinois is worse and sadly New York is worse.”

“We’re going to get to the bottom of all of it. It was a giant scam,” he added. “Other than that, we’re going to have a great New Year.”
