Three years have passed since Gordon’s misjudged proposal and the final season of this miraculous Aussie sitcom gets off to a melancholy start. Gordon and Ashley have unsatisfactory new partners and the brewery is struggling. Still, at least Colin seems well. A chance encounter brings the pair together again and the feelings are still strong, but there’s baggage to discard first. It’s not without plotting contrivances but, crucially, continues to feel wonderfully messy and real in emotional terms. The comedy and drama balance immaculately and the chemistry between Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer is as perfect as you’d expect from a real-life couple. Still the sweetest thing on TV. 9/11: The Saudi Connection

A quarter of a century after the 2001 attacks on the US, the origin stories of the perpetrators remain far from settled. This documentary explores the implications of thousands of newly released documents that, some argue, suggest the involvement of the Saudi Arabian government. The revelations centre on Omar al-Bayoumi, who has been accused of being a middle man between the Saudis and the first two hijackers (al-Bayoumi and the Saudi government deny these claims). PH

Fred from the First Dates restaurant, TV’s favourite maître d’, continues his fancy hotel tour in a South African safari lodge. But service is never far from his mind, as he offers to help the team prepare a “bush braai” outdoor barbecue. There’s also time for an encounter with an elephant. Hollie Richardson

Crushed by a gargoyle thrown from a balcony is one hell of a way to go. Worse still if it happens during your nightly “ablution stop” in a garden. That’s what happens to a toy inventor this week, and it’s up to Alexa to work out who did it: “I hope he managed to zip up first.” HR

Amol Rajan hosts another brain-off between two student teams: Birmingham and an adorably chaotic quartet from Leicester. Highlights include a spectacular mishearing of a famous novel’s title and a classics question that’s much easier than it would have been a few years ago. Jack Seale

Another new series of copaganda, this one exploring the aftermath of 999 calls. It begins with a fascinating case: a train passenger has noticed something deeply troubling on a fellow traveller’s phone and informed the police. The unfolding investigation is bigger than anyone could have expected, involving a network of child exploitation. PH
Film choice
Imitation of Life (Douglas Sirk, 1959), 4.25pm, Film4
Douglas Sirk’s melodrama is remarkable in that it bats around a number of knotty, topical questions about racism, sexism and class but is also a powerfully intimate drama about the bond between two mothers and their daughters. Lana Turner headlines as actor Lora, whose independent spirit leads to theatre fame, despite being a single parent to Sandra Dee’s Susie. But it’s the other pairing that provides the main dramatic force: Juanita Moore as Annie, Lora’s Black maid, and Susan Kohner as her unhappy child Sarah Jane, who can, fatefully, pass for white.
