Newcastle clinched a 2-1 win over Fulham yesterday following a late goal from Bruno Guimarães. Jacob Murphy broke the deadlock in the 18th minute before Saša Lukić equalised in the second half at St James’ Park. Guimarães then fired the hosts into the lead in the 90th minute. The result left Newcastle 11th in the Premier League table.
Ruben Amorim praised “working machine” Bryan Mbeumo, who scored twice, and pointed to the significance of a third consecutive league win after Manchester United’s 4-2 victory over Brighton at Old Trafford on Saturday.
First-half goals from Matheus Cunha and Casemiro were followed after the break by Mbeumo making it 3-0. Yet from cruising United suffered a scare as Danny Welbeck and Charalampos Kostoulas scored – the latter in added time before Mbeumo’s second close to the final whistle.
Amorim was asked about Mbeumo’s import and his role in recruiting him in the summer. “He’s a working machine. He’s so good in transitions. He’s improving when we are organising the final third,” said the head coach, before praising his connection with Amad Diallo at right wing-back. “[It] is really hard to beat these two guys because they change positions, they are really fast, they are good in one against one.
“My role was as a manager to explain what I want from him but it was more the club and you guys. We can struggle a lot but it’s Manchester United. When Manchester United is there and when we feel that this player wants to come here, no matter what, no matter what the position, no matter if it’s Champions League or not, we also give everything to bring these kind of guys and that was the case.”
While Liverpool suffered their fourth consecutive Premier League defeat yesterday, Manchester United earned their third successive win. The Red Devils managed a 4-2 victory over Brighton at Old Trafford thanks to goals from Matheus Cunha, Casemiro and a brace from Bryan Mbeumo.
Also in the Premier League yesterday, Sunderland clinched a 2-1 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge thanks to a late strike from Chemsdine Talbi. The Blues had taken a 1-0 lead in the early stages thanks to Alejandro Garnacho before Wilson Isidor levelled things up in the 22nd minute.
Talbi then scored the winner for the visitors in added time.
Arne Slot admitted that Saturday’s defeat by Brentford was “up there” as perhaps the most disappointed he has been in his time as Liverpool manager, and acknowledged that opponents seem to have worked out how to play against them.
“Teams have a certain playing style against us, which is a very good strategy to play,” said Slot, “and we haven’t found an answer yet, and that every time going 1-0 down doesn’t really help as well.”
In the late game yesterday, Liverpool fell to their fourth consecutive Premier League defeat which left them sixth in the table. The Reds suffered a 3-2 loss to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium despite a late fightback.
