Mimi Mollica is an award-winning documentary photographer whose work explores identity, environment, migration and social change. He is the founder of Offspring Photo Meet and the Sicily Photo Masterclass, and the author of Terra Nostra, East London Up Close, and his latest book, Moon City.
In Moon City (co-published with Dewi Lewis Publishing), Mollica spent more than five years photographing the lunar surface and the city’s glass and steel towers, overlaying images of people walking the streets, captured through telescope and mobile phone.
The result is a poetic, urgent meditation on how we have become both victims and promoters of a system that encages us.

Moon City Series - 01
I remember that morning because I got lucky! Usually, each capture required time, patience, and precision – setting the tripod on the balcony, calibrating the viewfinder, framing with my phone, focusing and waiting for the right moment. But that day, everything fell into place. I woke up to a beautiful sunrise, set everything up in minutes, and CLICK! That was it.
Moon City Series – 02
Earthshine is the dim glow on the moon’s unlit side, caused by sunlight reflected off the Earth – also known as the “old moon in the arms of the new”. I took this photo during the crowdfunding campaign for Moon City – a time of changes, intense ups and downs, stress and self-doubt. As so often over the past five years, the moon became my companion and guide. That night was magical. Balancing the exposure was tricky but I couldn’t be happier with the result.
Moon City Series – 03
This is one of my absolute favourite photos from Moon City, so much so that I decided to put this one as the front cover of the book’s sleeve. The glare surrounding the building is caused by the lens aberration of my telescope picking up the last rays of sunlight, and I interpret these glares as radio waves highlighting the underlying tension between the city and the cosmos.

I love this one. It’s one of the cleanest and most eloquent images I’ve captured of the moon’s beauty and power. Its colour palette reminds me of the Nasa images that first made me fall in love with science and astrophysics. A timeless image – one I never tire of looking at.

Moon City Series - 05
This photo of a British Airways aeroplane silhouetted by the half-moon just behind it is one of the most recent photographs I took for Moon City. I must say that it was quite challenging to take this one, because things seen through the telescope pass across the frame in the blink of an eye, much quicker than anything else captured on the streets with an ordinary camera. Oh yes, I’ll give myself a pat on the shoulder for this one – I’m truly proud of it!
